In praise of games that make you slow down
Most mobile games are engineered to keep your thumbs moving. Notifications, timers, streaks — all designed to pull you back. So it's refreshing when a game just lets you exist in it.
Hollow Atlas is the one that reminded me why I love this. No combat, no clock. You explore an island and slowly understand what happened there. The satisfaction comes from your own deductions, not from a reward popping up.
These games ask something unusual of a mobile player: patience. But that patience pays off with the kind of quiet 'aha' moment that a slot-machine of dopamine hits never quite matches.
If you've felt burned out on games that treat you like a metric, try one of these. Play it with the sound on, ideally somewhere quiet. It's a different kind of relaxing.
